MACEDONIA, OH – October 3, 2013 – TPC Wire & Cable Corp., a leading supplier of wire, cable and connectors used in harsh industrial environments, was honored as a VISIONARY at the 2013 Innovation in Business Conference & Awards in Cleveland, Ohio on Tuesday, September 24, 2013. The 15th annual award ceremony hosted by SBN honors business leaders and organizations that have demonstrated a history of innovative ideas and have developed cutting-edge products.
TPC was awarded the honor for their innovative work on the first-ever antimicrobial cable product called DEFENDER® for the industrial food & beverage and medical facilities markets. The DEFENDER® antimicrobial cable jacket eliminates greater than 99 percent of bacteria (e.g. E. Coli, Salmonella) and fungus (e.g. Aspergillus) within 24 hours of exposure.
TPC’s research and development team, led by Todd Hadbavny, product manager; Keeley Schneider, material development engineer; and Jay Hathaway, food & beverage segment manager created the product in response to customer concerns about keeping their food and beverage manufacturing facilities clean by managing bacteria, fungus and mold growth on machinery, cables, floors, walls and other equipment. As a supplier of industrial cable, TPC focused on how to use antimicrobial technology as it applied to electrical cable.
DEFENDER® antimicrobial cable contains a silver ion based antimicrobial additive commonly used in many consumer packaged goods. Adding this to the cable jacket during the manufacturing process provides long-term broad-spectrum protection from bacteria, mold and fungus that is built-in to the cable jacket. The protection is continuous and does not transfer to skin or other surfaces.
